Rainy Season

September 7, 2010

To: All American Citizens
From: American Citizens Services Unit, Consular Section

The U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa reminds U.S. citizens living in or traveling to Honduras to exercise caution during the rainy season. Rainfall for the 2010 rainy season has exceeded by 287% the average rainfall for the western half of Honduras. Around Tegucigalpa, heavy rain has resulted in the following:leaking roofs, damage to or failure of retaining walls, and collapsed roadways.

U.S. citizens should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings around Tegucigalpa and especially in mountainous or hilly areas, particularly in areas where retaining walls have already partially or fully collapsed. If you note cracks or heavy erosion in the area of a retaining wall, seriously consider removing yourself to a safer location.

Be on the lookout for changes in road conditions as well. During the rainy season, what was once a pothole can easily become a washout. In certain areas, mud slides can also occur more frequently.Drive at reasonable speeds and exercise caution at all times.

U.S. citizens living or traveling in Honduras are strongly encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration website (https://travelregistration.state.gov), and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Honduras. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.

U.S. citizens should consult the Country Specific Information for Honduras and the latest Travel Alerts and Warnings and Worldwide Caution at the State Department's website: http://travel.state.gov

Current information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States, or for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
