TEGUCIGALPA - Ambassador Lisa Kubiske presented the annual "Premio Martin Luther King, Jr." award to Mrs. Julieta Castellanos, UNAH Rector, in recognition of her struggle for the social and democratic rights of the Honduran people ("Luchas Reinvidicativas por los Derechos Sociales y Democráticos del Pueblo Hondureño") in a ceremony Friday, April 20 at the Iglesia Episcopal Santa María de los Angeles.  The event, co-sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation and the Instituto Hondureño de Cultura Interamericana commemorated the 44th Anniversary of the Death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (April 4 1968-2012) and the 215th Anniversary of the Presence of the Garifuna People in Honduras.

In remarks by Rene Garcia Oliva, Coordinator of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation, Rosario Cordova, Executive Director of IHCI and Ambassador Kubiske, Ms. Castellanos was praised for her dedication to the cause of justice.  "Ms. Castellanos has been an inspiration to a new generation of Hondurans and believes in fighting for a country where it is possible to gain justice, security and democracy," said Ambassador Kubiske.

Former recipients of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award include Bishop Lloyd Allen, Mary Flake de Flores, Bishop Romulo Emiliani, Guillermo Anderson, President Barack Obama, and Sor María Rosa.  No award was presented in 2010.
